This type of flat-bottomed fishing boat from Holland was developed around 1900, a period in which the fishing industry in Holland was having difficulties and the boats of the time had become too expensive to build. The development of a new hull structure resulted in lower building costs compared to the round- bottomed hull, which had been used until that time. To withstand heavy seas, the new structure was relatively wide, with a high stem. Because of its excellent sailing properties and spaciousness, this type of boat later was used as popular yacht.
